CHENA SPRINT FOR IMPACT

EXPLORING SUSTANABLE ENTERPRISE OPPORTUNITIES IN LOCAL TOURISM FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY

The past two years have shown that new approaches and mindsets are needed for sustainable growth. In Zambia and across the world, there is a call for an economic recovery that puts communities (people) and innovation first – without sacrificing our natural environment. There is no sector more tasked with having to adapt and embody this new approach than the tourism sector, which has also arguably been the most affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the entire world adapts to our new way of living, doing business and interacting, the tourism sector is leading the way in implementing a multi-dimensional approach to being an industry that considers sustainability, both financial and social, resilience and looking internally at home-grown solutions.

This is true for Zambia where tourism has traditionally played a role in our economic and social development. Research from 2020 focused on the effects of tourism and Covid-19 showed that tourism contributes 7.3% to GDP and provides over 469,000 jobs for Zambians and further contributes to a range of sectors indirectly from Travel to Recreation services. Domestic tourism has allowed the growth of the artisanal sector and more importantly the sustaining of livelihoods of Zambians working in the sector. However, there is both the economic and social role that tourism can play in the Green Recovery. By demolishing silos that held the best ideas at bay, more Zambians can be attracted to participate as both consumers and investors in the nature-based economy, and by linking Zambian heritage and indigenous knowledge to the uniquely local experience.

Understanding the undercurrents of the world we are living in and seeing an opportunity to spark innovation and creativity across a range of sectors in Zambia to actualize a ‘Green Recovery’, is the unique concept behind the Chena Sprint for Impact, an idea born from this local tourism event and marketplace of innovation. The concept is founded on three pillars; tourism, sustainable growth, and creativity, rooted in the Zambian experience.

The Chena Sprint for Impact Series is designed to be a landmark event, envisioned to bring the best Zambia has to offer in terms of innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and ingenuity. The event brings together creatives, corporates, and others in a truly breath-taking setting to discuss ideas and possibilities of economic recovery and sustainability. Like other tourism events on the continent such as the Durban July in South Africa or Rio Carnival in Brazil, the Chena Sprint for Impact Tournament has bold aspirations of being Zambia’s landmarked domestic tourism event that attracts both regional and international interest and visitors by offering innovation, creativity, and adventure in a uniquely Zambian way. It is a microcosm of the authentically local experience from the sprints in the ingenious handmade canoes, to the fashion and food.

The multi-weekend event is centered around a 20-week canoe race taking place on Lusaka’s biggest man-made dam in Chongwe district at Nkwashi. The sprint teams made up of corporates will have to participate in invite-only curated discussions on a range of topics that encourage divergent thinking. This session is followed by the canoe sprint, thematic showcase and activities which will be open to the public. Each weekend will have a different theme that showcases activities with the ‘Zambian experience’ from fashion, food, to innovation.

Our inaugural series has a particular focus on SDGS. Countries all over the World are on their way to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals of 2030. We wish to use the Sprint to stress the urgency of the achievement of these goals and thereby act as an example for other sectors of the economy to follow.
The objective of the Chena Sprint for Impact Series is to:

1.Raise awareness and provide early warning of the urgent need to protect and care for our natural and indigenous assets.

2. Provide a marketplace for creative local and artisanal products.

3. Give the right conditions and environment for businesses to come out of silos and build ecosystems together. It is an effective platform to build ecosystems.

4. Become an activation point for innovative solutions that promote impact and push companies towards SDGs avoiding SDG washing and assist/encourage them to make a business case linked to the SDGs (approximately).
